When you need this

Vacation planning is a long, shared conversation: where to go, when everyone can get time off, how much it'll cost, and who books what. Families and friends go back and forth for weeks, so most of the language is tentative. People say "we're thinking about", "we might", "we were hoping to", because nothing is decided until the flights are booked.

The American word is vacation. British speakers say holiday for the same thing, and you'll meet both. In the US, the holidays usually means the end-of-year season, not a trip.
