When you need this

Once you're away, the conversations change. You ask locals for recommendations, check in and out, deal with the small things that go wrong, and answer friends back home asking how it's going. It's a mix of polite requests to strangers and relaxed chat with the people you're traveling with.

With strangers, lead with "Excuse me" or "Sorry to bother you", then ask. People are generous with directions and tips when you start politely, and a short thank-you at the end ("That's really helpful") closes it well.
