When you need this

Sometimes you have to tell someone they upset you: a friend who keeps canceling, a coworker who talks over you, a roommate who borrows things without asking. Saying nothing feels safe, but the anger stays. Saying too much starts a fight. These phrases sit in the middle.

The shape that works has three steps. Ask for the conversation: "Can we talk about something?" Say what happened and how you felt: "I was upset when you left without me." Then ask for what you want: "Next time, please tell me." Short, clear, and about the action, not about the person. "You're selfish" is an attack. "I felt left out" is information.

Answers matter too. If someone tells you this, "You're right, I'm sorry" is often the whole reply they need.
