Nature calls

Meaning

"Nature calls" is a joking way to say you have to use the bathroom. Your body is "nature", and it's calling you away, like a phone ringing that you can't ignore. People say "Nature calls" or "When nature calls..." as they stand up to leave the room.

It's a euphemism: a soft, indirect way of talking about something people feel a little awkward naming. The humor makes it less awkward. It's harmless and not rude, but it sounds a bit old-fashioned and jokey, the kind of thing a dad says on a road trip.

Use it with friends and family, or when you want to be a little funny. In a meeting or at a formal dinner, skip the joke. "Excuse me for a moment" is enough; nobody needs to know where you're going. If you need to ask, "Where's the restroom?" is the polite American word in public places. At home, Americans say "bathroom".
