Meaning
"I'm on my way" means you've left and you're traveling toward someone right now. The "way" is the road or route between you and them, and you're already on it. It's the message people send when a friend asks "Where are you?"
It's neutral and works with anyone: friends, family, a coworker waiting in the lobby, a client. In texts it often shrinks to "on my way" or even "omw". The short forms are fine with friends but look too casual in a work message.
