Questions at the gym
“Excuse me, are you using this bench, or can I work in?”

When you need this
Gyms are shared spaces, so most gym talk is short and practical: who's using the machine, how long they'll be, where the towels are. People wear headphones and don't want long chats. A polite, quick question and a thank-you is all anyone expects.
Start with "Excuse me" and a gesture, since the other person may not hear you. Keep the question short enough to read on your lips. Then step back and let them finish their set.
