When you need this

Big news about your love life usually goes to one friend first. It's exciting, a little embarrassing, and you want a reaction. This page has both sides: the lines for sharing the news, and the lines a good friend uses to answer.

Sharing tends to start with a warning shot: "Can I tell you something?" or "Promise you won't laugh." Then comes a softened version of the news. "I've kind of been seeing someone" is a classic, because "kind of" makes it sound small, even when it isn't. "Seeing someone" means dating, usually for a few weeks or more. If you're still unsure how they feel, you'll need "What if she doesn't feel the same way?"

The friend's side is mostly excitement and curiosity: "No way. Tell me everything." "When can I meet him?" A good friend also knows when to give a small push ("Go for it") and when to be careful ("Take it slow"). Respect matters here too. Ask, tease a little, but let your friend decide how much to share.
