A big American grocery store can have thirty aisles and a dozen kinds of every product. You'll need to ask where things are, check prices, order at the deli counter and get through the checkout line. Staff are used to short, direct questions, so you don't need a long introduction; "Excuse me" plus the question is enough.

At the register, the cashier runs through the same few questions every time: bags, loyalty card, how you're paying. Once you know them, the checkout takes thirty seconds instead of three confused minutes.
