When you need this

Off the course, golf talk sounds different. Friends invite each other, complain about their swing, brag a little about one great hole, and make fun of their own scores. Much of it is self-deprecating: golfers love to say how badly they played, because everyone has bad days and nobody wants to sound like a show-off.

If you don't play, you still get invited, and you still hear the stories. You can say yes, say you're a beginner, or turn it down politely. Beginners are welcome in most friendly groups, as long as they're honest about it. "I'm terrible, but I'm happy to try" is a line people like to hear.
