When you need this
Many first-year students in the US live in a dorm, a university building full of student rooms. British students call it "halls" or "halls of residence". You often share a room with a roommate you've never met. Bathrooms may be shared by the whole floor, and you eat in the dining hall with a meal plan, which is food you pay for at the start of the semester.
Each floor usually has a resident advisor, an older student who helps with problems and keeps the rules. Most dorms have quiet hours, times at night when you must keep the noise down.
Dorm life is close living, so the language is about sharing space kindly. The first talk with a new roommate matters. Agreeing on rules on day one takes ten minutes. Fixing a problem in week six can take a month.
