A cubicle gives you a desk and three low walls, and it gives you neighbors who can hear every call you make. Life in a row of cubicles works when everyone follows the same unwritten rules: keep your voice down, take long calls somewhere else, don't eat anything that smells strong at your desk, and don't lean over the wall without a reason.
The language is mostly about small requests and small apologies. When a neighbor is loud, ask about the situation, not the person: "Is that a long call? I've got a deadline." When you're the loud one, notice it first and fix it before anyone has to ask. A friendly tone matters more than the exact words, because you'll sit next to this person again tomorrow, and the day after that.
