Shadow Ananya first. She's sharing something personal, so "Then I burned out two years ago" should be quiet and plain, with no drama. Then take Eric's part. He's defensive at first and half convinced by the end; his last line is a joke that means yes.

  1. AnanyaEric, you sent me an email at eleven forty last night.
  2. EricDid I? Sorry. I was finishing the test plan.
  3. AnanyaYou don't need to apologize. I'm more worried about you. That's the fourth late email this week.
  4. EricEveryone works late here. The release is in two weeks.
  5. AnanyaI don't. I stop at seven, and I don't open email until the morning.
  6. EricHow? Don't people get annoyed?
  7. AnanyaAt first, a bit. Then they got used to it. If it's really urgent, they call.
  8. EricAnd how often do they call?
  9. AnanyaAbout twice this year. Everything else could wait until morning.
  10. EricI can't switch off like that. If I don't check, I lie awake wondering what I've missed.
  11. AnanyaI used to be the same. Then I burned out two years ago and had to take a month off.
  12. EricI didn't know that.
  13. AnanyaMost people don't. That's why I set boundaries now. I don't want to go through that again.
  14. EricOkay. Maybe I could start small. No email after nine?
  15. AnanyaThat's a good start. Take the email app off your phone, too. That's what really helped me.
  16. EricOff my phone? That feels dangerous.
  17. AnanyaTry it for one week. If Bangalore is still standing, keep going.
  18. EricFine. One week. But if the release breaks, I'm blaming you.

Say it today

Use it once in a real conversation before tomorrow. Out loud counts, even to yourself.
