The pattern

"I'm calling to" plus a verb tells the person on the phone why you called, in the first ten seconds. "Hi, I'm calling to book a table" saves both of you the awkward "So, um..." part. On a call there is no face to read, so a clear purpose early is what makes you sound confident.

The shape is always the same: greeting, your name if needed, then "I'm calling to" plus the purpose. "Hi, this is Arjun Mehta. I'm calling to reschedule my appointment." After that, the other person knows what to do.

Say it out loud

Tap a sentence to hear it. Say it after the voice.

  1. "Calling about" plus a noun works the same way.

  2. When they called you first and you are calling back.

Check yourself

1When should "I'm calling to..." come in a call?
2They called you earlier and you are calling back. What do you say?
3Which follows "I'm calling about"?
