When you need this
A big department store has everything on six floors, and the staff are there to help, but they don't follow you around. You'll talk to them for three reasons: to find a section, to ask about a size or a price, and to pay or return something. Each one takes a single, short question.
If a salesperson comes up and asks "Can I help you find anything?" and you want to look alone, "I'm just looking, thanks" is the polite answer. They'll smile and leave you alone. It's not rude; it's what everyone says.
