What they are really asking

You'll usually hear this one as "What were you involved in outside class?" When your work history is short, the interviewer looks for evidence somewhere else. Clubs, teams, volunteering and student jobs are where you have already shown whether you turn up, take responsibility and get along with people. So the question isn't "Were you busy?" It's "What did you do outside class that tells me how you'll behave at work?"

The trap is the list. Five clubs in a row sounds like you joined everything and did nothing. One or two activities, with a role and a result, say far more.

A shape that works

Activity, role, result, link. Name the activity in a few words. Say what you actually did there, especially if you had any responsibility. Give one small result or moment. Then connect it to the job in one sentence. If you did nothing outside class because you worked or cared for family, say that. A part-time job is an extracurricular activity, and often a better one.
