That's a high salary for this position. Where did you come up with that figure?
“I understand. Let me explain how I arrived at that number.”

What they are really asking
Sometimes the interviewer really thinks your number is too high. Sometimes they're testing whether you'll drop it the moment someone pushes. Either way, the question is about your reasons. Can you explain where the figure came from, calmly, without apologizing or getting defensive?
The two mistakes are opposites. One candidate panics and cuts the number in half on the spot. The other argues and makes the room tense. The better path sits in the middle: explain your basis, ask what they had in mind, and show you're willing to talk about the whole offer. Nobody can promise this ends with the salary you wanted. But a calm, reasoned answer keeps the conversation open and shows the negotiating skills many employers value.
A shape that works
Acknowledge, explain, ask, open the package. Start with a calm "I understand." Give your basis in two sentences: the research, your experience, or how much the role covers. Ask what range they have in mind. Then say you're open to looking at the whole offer, such as a salary review after six months, training or extra vacation. Don't argue, and don't apologize for your number.

Imagine an interviewer has told you your number is too high. Record a forty-five-second reply: say "I understand," give your basis in two sentences, ask their range, and name one other part of the package you'd consider. Listen back and remove any apology or any sentence that argues. Record it again.
