Meaning

To read between the lines is to understand what someone really means, even though they didn't say it directly. The picture is a written page: the words are on the lines, but the real message is hiding in the white space between them. You read between the lines of emails, polite refusals, reviews, and news reports.

It is neutral and useful everywhere, especially at work, where people are often too polite to be direct. "We'll consider it" can mean "no". "Interesting idea" can mean "I don't like it". Reading between the lines is a real skill, but be careful not to read in things that aren't there. When in doubt, ask a clear question: "Are you saying you'd prefer a different approach?"
