Meaning

A couch potato is someone who spends a lot of time sitting on the couch, usually watching TV or scrolling on a phone, and not moving much. The picture is funny on purpose: a potato does nothing, stays in one place and slowly sinks into the cushions. You can be a couch potato for one lazy Sunday, or you can be one as a habit.

It is informal and mostly friendly. People say it about themselves all the time, with a smile: "I was a couch potato all weekend." Said about someone else, it can sting a little, because it suggests they are lazy. Between friends it is teasing; to someone who is tired, sick or low on energy, it can feel like a judgment. A softer way to say the same thing is "I had a quiet day in."
