This phrase has an edge. It shows no sympathy and a little satisfaction, so it can hurt. Use it with care. Said about yourself, it's humble and even funny: "I didn't bring an umbrella. Serves me right." About a close friend, with a grin, it's teasing. About someone who's really upset, it's unkind.
