Meaning
To make it big is to become very successful, usually famous or rich or both. "You made it big" is what you say to someone whose career took off: a musician on the radio, a friend whose small business now has shops in five cities. "Big" is the size of the success, not of the person.
It is informal and admiring, and you often hear it about dreams: "She moved to Los Angeles to make it big." Between old friends it can carry a little teasing, as in "you're too important for us now". Keep the tone warm, or it can sound jealous. For a smaller, steady success, "you're doing really well" fits better; "made it big" is for the headline kind.
