When you need this

Not every baseball player is a professional. Cities from Toronto to Sydney have adult amateur leagues where teachers, nurses and software engineers play on weekends. The level ranges from very serious to mostly social, and people often ask about that first: "Is it competitive, or is it more for fun?"

The language here is about organization. You join a league, try out for a team if it's selective, pay league fees, and follow a schedule of games. You'll talk about your position on the field, where you are in the batting order, and how the team is doing in the standings.

Adult players also talk a lot about their bodies. After a few seasons, "I pulled a muscle" and "I'm sore" come up as often as the score. That's normal, and teammates will usually share their own stories about it.
