Once you know the basics, the next layer is the words fans and players use constantly: positions, kinds of plays, and a handful of rules that stop the game. They show up in live commentary, in highlights, and in any argument about who's the best player on the team.
Positions come first. The point guard runs the offense and passes a lot. Shooting guards and forwards score from different spots. The center is usually the tallest player, near the basket. People often say "the one" through "the five" instead, with the point guard as the one.
A lot of basketball words are ordinary verbs used in a special way. You grab a rebound, block a shot, steal the ball, drive to the basket. If you know the everyday meaning, you can usually guess the basketball meaning, and that's the fastest way to learn them.
