When you need this

Small talk fills the gaps: the elevator, the line at the coffee shop, the two minutes before a meeting starts. Nobody expects a deep conversation there. People want a friendly signal that says "I see you, and we're fine."

The safest topics are the ones you share with the other person right now: the weather, the place, the day of the week, the wait. Ask a light question, add one detail about yourself, and hand the turn back. If the other person gives a short answer, that's fine too. Small talk is allowed to end after four lines.
