When you need this

Every conversation starts with the same thirty seconds, so these are the phrases you will say more than any others in your life. There are three levels: the neutral ones that work anywhere, the friendly ones for people you know, and the careful ones for a first meeting or a formal setting. Pick one from each group and make it yours.

The replies matter as much as the openers. "How are you?" is not really a question; a long honest answer surprises people. "Good, thanks. You?" is the whole expected exchange.

Phrases

the relaxed version of "how are you", for people you see often

friendly and a little warmer than "how are you"

the reply that ends the ritual and hands it back

a relaxed reply that means "fine"

for the first meeting only; never say it to someone you already know
