Shadow Rohan first. A good manager's first reaction is congratulations, not scheduling, so let "that's wonderful" come before anything else and sound sincere. Then take Aiko's part. She's organized and a little nervous; her plan lines are steady, and her last line is pure relief.

  1. AikoRohan, have you got a few minutes? I have some news, and I wanted you to hear it first.
  2. RohanOf course. Come in. Is it good news, or should I sit down?
  3. AikoGood news, I think. I'm pregnant. The baby's due in early March.
  4. RohanAiko, that's wonderful. Congratulations. How are you feeling?
  5. AikoTired, mostly. Thank you. I've told my family, and now I'm telling you.
  6. RohanI'm glad you did. Have you thought about maternity leave yet?
  7. AikoI'd like to start in February and come back the following September. Is that possible?
  8. RohanThat's within the policy. HR can go through the details with you, including pay.
  9. AikoThanks. My biggest worry is the museum project here in Kyoto. It opens in April.
  10. RohanThat's for us to plan, not for you to worry about. But a good handover would help.
  11. AikoI could start training someone in December, so there's no rush at the end.
  12. RohanThat's very organized. Let's choose who together next week.
  13. AikoAnd I'd like to keep working normally until February, if my doctor agrees.
  14. RohanOf course. If you need to change anything, like hours or travel, tell me. No explanation needed.
  15. AikoShould I tell the team now, or wait?
  16. RohanThat's completely your choice. I won't say anything until you're ready.
  17. AikoMaybe after my next appointment. In about a month.
  18. RohanSounds good. And keep me in the loop on how you're doing, not only on the project.
  19. AikoI will. Thank you, Rohan. I was nervous about this conversation for no reason.

Say it today

Use it once in a real conversation before tomorrow. Out loud counts, even to yourself.
